Prize-giving 2015

Thank you to all of you who came along to our Fledglings/Busy Bees Prize-giving on Monday.  We had a great morning of celebration and the children looked very festive with their Santa hats on.

It is always difficult as a teacher to have to select only a few children to receive certificates/awards.  All of your children are 'winners' in their own way whether it is for their effort in learning, talent in the arts/sports or their positive attitudes with others.

These were the eight children from Delightful Ducklings who received a prize on Monday.

Taffiny, Jahdei, Celine, Laekim,Tekakwitha , Tufala

 Congratulations to you all!

Welcome to Week 6!

We have been very busy in Room 3!  Last Friday was Rowandale's Musical showcase.  Thank you to all our whanau and friends who came along to see us perform.  I am sure you were all familiar with our song, 'I like the flowers,' as learning the words was homework for the week.  All the children did very well  to get up on stage in front of a large audience.

Last week we also celebrated Diwali!  Room 3 coloured rongoli patterns which are now on display on the wall outside our room.  These colourful patterns are used to decorate the entrance to homes to welcome visitors during Diwali.

Our weaving we did for Niuean language week is also on display outside the room.  Here is a picture of the finished product.

Swimming begins this week which the children are very excited about.  Please send them with their named togs, towel and spare underwear in a plastic bag on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Your children made have mentioned they have had a reading or mathematics test recently.  These will be completed this week.  It is the time of the term when we test all children in these areas.  The results are used alongside classroom work to see the progress they are making and what they need to learn next.

Please remember my door is always open should you have anything you wish to talk to me about.

Have a good week!

Mrs Hawley-Simmonds

Welcome back!

Welcome back to Term 4!

We had a busy last two days of term 3.

Here are some of us dressed in our pj's for 'Pyjama Day.'   (Even Mr Vasau wore his dressing gown and slippers!)

'Wake up sleepy heads."

Motat

On the last day of term 3 we all boarded the bus to Motat to complete our unit about flight.

The children represented our school extremely well and you should be proud of them! Here are  a few photos to show you some of what we saw.

Thank you to the fantastic parent help who joined us on the day.  We could not have gone without your support!!

We did some experiments to learn about drag, lift, thrust and weight.

What a great day of experimenting and exploring.

Niuean Language Week

Fakalofa lahi atu,

Rowandale School is celebrating Niuean Language Week!  This morning we all met as a school in front of the flagpole to raise the Niuean flag, sing the National Anthem and listen to a group of children share some facts about Niue.

The flag is  yellow to represent the warmth and sunshine of Niue.
We will be doing some weaving in class this week so make sure you pop back to see our work!

Jellybeans Music Programme

This term we will be learning about music from around the world.  We are also going to have some music lessons run by a music specialist from a provider called 'Jellybeans.'  Today was our first lesson and we began to learn about beat and rhythm.

Tufala, Taffiny, Bethel and Hanna are using sticks to tap out a beat.

Thank you for continuing to support your child's education.

Regards,
Mrs Hawley-Simmonds

Duffy

Duffy Comes to Rowandale School!

Yesterday we were treated to Duffy Theatre.  It was a very funny show and the message to us all was how reading can teach us so many things!

Today we had another visitor to our school.  Mr Michel Mulipola was our Duffy Role Model.  He is a very talented cartoonist who also talked to our children about the importance of reading.

At the end of the day everyone went home with 2 brand new books!  Taffiny has been working so hard learning her high frequency words at school and at home that she received a certificate and an extra book.  Well done Taffiny!

It was like Christmas when we opened the box and saw our books.  Thank you Duffy and Books in Homes!

We have been busy learning about flight this term.  One of the activities we have done is to make paper planes and test them to see which designs fly better and why.

Here we are making and testing our planes.

Tongan language Week

6th September

Malo e lelei,
Last week we celebrated Tongan Language Week as a school!
In Room 3 we learnt a greeting song.
We hope you enjoy it.

We also made a tapa cloth.  Every class  at Rowandale made one and they were joined together to make a huge school  tapa which was on display at Friday's assembly.
Thank you to those Room 3 families who came along to join us in the celebrations.

Hello to the whanau of the Delightful Ducklings!

Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Greetings,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mrs Gaylene Hawley-Simmonds and I am the new teacher of room 3.

I have been teaching for 9 years and I was previously employed by Takanini School. My experience has been in the junior and middle part of school and I am excited to be working with your children.

Our main topic this term is ‘Flight.’ We will be asking questions such as;
How do things fly?, What is flying ? Do you need wings to fly?
It would be great if you could talk to your child about their learning.

You can support your child at school by making sure they bring their reading bag each day so they can bring home a reader to share with you. Don’t be worried about them using the pictures to help tell the story as they are an important ‘clue’ in reading. It is also very helpful if you talk to them about what has happened in the book. You can ask these questions in English or in your child’s first language if this helps with understanding.

I am looking forward to meeting you all. You are very welcome to pop in before or after
school if you have anything you wish to talk to me about concerning your
child.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Gaylene Hawley-Simmonds
